In baseball sabermetrics, batting average only treats every hit equally, whether a bunt single or a 450-foot grand slam. A slugging percentage calculator provides a much clearer picture of offensive power.
The Slugging Percentage (SLG) Formula
Example: A player has 500 at-bats with 90 singles, 30 doubles, 5 triples, and 25 home runs:
- Total Bases = 90 + (2 × 30) + (3 × 5) + (4 × 25) = 90 + 60 + 15 + 100 = 265 Total Bases
- SLG = 265 ÷ 500 = .530
